A Tiny Tree Obsession

What exactly is a Bonsai? The literal word means “planted in a container.” This art form is derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, part of which was then redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism you can read more here (https://www.bonsaiempire.com/origin/what-is-bonsai)

Interestingly enough, almost any tree can be turned into a Bonsai and there’s something about these tiny trees, this perfect mix of nature and art, that has everyone (including myself) completely hooked. I’ve always known about Bonsais and found them beautiful, but I didn’t understand the story behind them or how much work and care goes into these tiny little trees.

They’re sensitive and needy (something I can relate to), yet also elegant, tranquil, and timeless. If you’re into art and don’t know where to start, a Bonsai is the perfect place. Yes, they need careful attention and grooming you read that correctly, they need grooming (maybe one day I’ll do a post on this, though I’m still learning myself) but they truly are living sculptures. They elevate any room, bringing calm, beauty, and a deep sense of intention.

My Bonsai (Sir Ernst II yes, the second, because sadly I killed Sir Ernst the I, may he rest in peace) is a topic of conversation every time someone enters my apartment. He’s eye-catching and beautiful. I got my Bonsai from my father-in-law, who lives solely for his Bonsais. They are his children, he loves them dearly. He’s taught me so much about the Bonsai: the care, the patience, the slow magic of watching one grow. He’s also my Bonsai doctor, groomer, and babysitter whenever we’re out of town.

Sir Ernst II (actually named after my father-in-law) is a full-time job but he’s very worth it.

There’s just something special about the presence of a Bonsai. It forces you to slow down. To notice. To nurture. It adds a little world of calm to any space like a quiet friend in the corner, existing purely to be looked at, appreciated, and cared for. A true tiny tree obsession.
