The Secret to Better Sleep and a Snatched Jawline: Tape Your Mouth, Girly

Okay, hear me out: I tape my mouth shut every night. And no, I’m not being dramatic — I’m being wellness-forward. I first heard about this ritual from Laryn Bossneck on The Skinny Confidential, and what started as a “let’s try this slightly unhinged TikTok thing” has officially become a core part of my bedtime routine.

It’s giving beauty sleep. It’s giving silent slumber. It’s giving... jawline.

Mouth taping might sound intense, but it’s actually insanely simple: take a little strip of skin-safe tape (don’t worry, we’re not out here using duct tape hello, wrinkles), place it gently over your lips before bed and that’s it. You sleep. The magic happens.

So why would anyone voluntarily tape their mouth shut?

Let me tell you why:

  • Deeper, better quality sleep — Mouth taping encourages nasal breathing, which helps your body stay in a more restful state all night. I wake up less groggy and way more refreshed (with zero middle-of-the-night dry mouth, thank you very much).

  • Jawline, engaged. — Keeping your mouth closed while you sleep supports better tongue posture and facial muscle tone over time. Not to be dramatic, but I swear it’s subtly snatched my lower face.

  • Snoring? Never heard of her. — If you snore we need to fix that hello we are girls and this helps reduce snoring by keeping the air flowing through your nose where it belongs.

  • Bye-bye, teeth grinding — It can help minimize bruxism (aka clenching and grinding thank you google for informing me this is a word) by gently encouraging a more relaxed jaw position.

  • And let’s be real... mouth breathing isn’t cute. — It can lead to dry mouth, bad breath, and even dental issues. Taping helps retrain you to breathe through your nose like the delicate, elegant creatures you are.

But isn’t it weird?

Yes. At first. You’ll feel like a DIY science experiment for maybe 30 seconds. But after night two, I was hooked (night one I woke up with my tape on my forehead, dont ask). It felt cozy, like a little sleep mask… but for your mouth. Now, if I forget to tape, something feels off. Like I forgot to take off my makeup.

My Tips If You Want to Try It:

  • Use proper mouth tape! I love a good Amazon brand — super affordable and easy. But if you’re feeling extra fancy (and aesthetic), The Skinny Confidential makes the chicest pink mouth tape that looks just as good on your nightstand as it feels on your face.

  • Start slow. Try it for one night just to see how it feels and where it ends up. Chances are it won’t stay on the first time (mine ended up halfway on my cheek by morning), but that’s totally normal. Your body’s adjusting.

  • Stick with it. Give it a few nights. Once your body gets used to it, you’ll start waking up feeling shockingly refreshed… and maybe even a little snatched.

It’s weird. It’s wonderful. And I swear it’s one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to glow up your sleep routine. You might get funny looks at sleepovers, but hey you’ll be the one waking up well-rested, snatched, and silently superior.

Sweet dreams (and shut mouths).

XOXO Sophie
